The first mines in the area to be later
called Victor were discovered in 1891 and 1892. At first, there
was no thought of creating a town but, as the population increased,
it grew into a town. The new town was named Victor, after an
early homesteader named Victor C. Adams. But the names to be
long remembered in the early history of Victor are those of the
Woods brothers, Frank M. and Harry E. Some say they were scoundrels.
Others say they were pillars of the community. Either way, the
Woods brothers were promoters. It was they who did as much as
anyone to develop Victor as a competitor to its sister but larger
city, Cripple Creek. During its boom days, Victor had several
churches, Masons, Elks, Odd Fellows and Unions. Some of its early
buildings are well preserved and the town warrants a visit. Victor
is located just south of Cripple Creek. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
